Wonderful show as always at the Blue Moon on Saturday night. The new material sounds wonderful, and I can't wait to hear it evolve. I especially appreciated Old White Men (definitely reminded me of my grandpa). Many thanks and we look forward to seeing you next year!

My wife and I loved your performance at Hinsdale's Acoustic Renaissance on Valentine's Day... your singing and guitar were sensational, and we haven't laughed so hard between songs as we did last night.  Thanks a million.

Your return to Southern New JerseyTuesday, January 26th 2010 5:19PM

We look forward to your intimate concert Saturday, February 6 at the Fuel House in Vineland New Jersey.  Special guest Patty Blee will  be a great way to start off the evening. Seating is limited to 50 so this gives the audience a great up close and personal performance.

Hey Vance,

My name is Jeff Jacobs. I saw you at the acoustic long island mansion in St. James, NY two summers ago and since that night, no measure of space/time can get your songs out of my head. Goodbye Pluto and Unfamiliar Moon resonate strongest for me (I'm sure you hear that a lot, but it's so true - you should be very proud of them. A lot of people post on this forum, and there's a reason for it!) I am a songwriter and often while conceptualizing melodies and lyrics, I will harken back to your performance inside my head and say "What would Vance do?" The overall set was mind-boggling, and to top it off, your ego is untainted by success! Bravo, sir. I'm excited for you to come to NY and hope to bring some friends to City Winery.

Best,
Jeff

hey Vance i just wanted to let you know that you changed my outlook on singing and songwriting at the Cherrywood on Sunday.
I was the young dude you gave that cd to. I love the album man.
You lifted my spirit way up my friend. Pure Joy is all i can think of when i listen to your voice. and you are a pretty awesome guitar player as well. I play as well. Im glad my friends of BOSU got that show hooked up, and i cant wait to see you again so i can bring all of my un evolved friends to listen...
anyway i will be picking up the rest of your albums as well with actual cash this time!
Thank you brother.

Just some thanks to Vance on Thanksgiving.  For some years ow, when our post/in/pre-college kids are together, like today, and we ask someone to put music on for the house, it's more than likely Vance.  This mixed with memories of going to performances as family or couple, adds another warm layer to the holidays.
Hope to see you back on the Eastern Shore (Maryland) soon!

We just saw Vance at the Kennett Flash last night - two great new experiences for us.  What a wonderful entertainer --- we already knew we loved the songwriting, vocals and guitar playing but had no idea about the sense of humor.  It was a delightful night, and one we will truly remember for a long time.  Great value in the 2 hour show but we could have listened to all night.  (I guess that's why we've been playing Vance's CDs all morning!)  Blessings to Vance for sharing his many talents with us and touching our hearts!

Vance, I  have loved your work since I first heard it on WNCW here in NC.
I was looking for some videos to share with some folks who don't know your work. The You Tube Video of your interview is great . Anyone who knows your work would like it. However, people being what they are, with the attention span of gnats, the musical videos were not of a quality soundwise to share.Have I missed some that were of a better  sound quality?  Heck, I like everything you do. Still, I'd like to make sure these folks grow to love your work as well
PLease come back and play North Carolina. Then I could simply make them come with me to the concert. Thanks and lots of luck to you.

I had the extreme pleasure of attending my first Vance concert last night in Webster, NY. It was, by far, the best money I ever spent! Listening to his music (daily, I admit) and watching the DVD is just not the same as the real thing.......I am in awe of the immense talent and charismatic presence Vance has.......and what a great guy! WOW! I'm already looking forward to another concert......thank you Vance; you definitely live up to your brother's recommendation and praise.

Well crafted songs, incredible fingerstyle playing, strong vocals, poetic storytelling at its best... all that and funny as hell too.  And I won't even get into your ability to "channel" everyone from The Boss, to Aaron Neville, to Richard Thompson.   When the tour road seems long and the business rears its ugly head, just remember that you are very blessed to be able to get up everyday and do what you do Mr G. Thanks for a great night of entertainment.

Mr. Gilbert, we met when you gave the songwriting class down here in Lake Charles, Louisiana. You know, the little town with the alligators, nutria rats, and rabbit festivals... :-)
Thank you for being so kind, I love listening to  Unfamiliar Moon.  With my new knowledge I am now able to spot where you used your lyrical skills that you taught us.  Songs have taken on a new meaning for me, especially your's. Leaving Avon paints a picture, Gondolier is sweet and lovable, I've Got A Plane is so much fun and it has a great message, That Front Porch Song is like a bittersweet memory with a really good tap-your-foot-to-it beat.  Alone Down Here makes me want to cry with its strong words and the substance you put into them.  And my favorite, Your Brighter Day is the best thing to listen to when you need that little pick-me-up, it makes me smile every time.  I'm so glad I was able to see you in person and wish you the best of luck, you've definetly motivated me to follow my musical dreams.
God Bless,

From VanceMonday, October 15th 2007 3:04PM

Hi All,
Thanks forall the support and lovely posts here.
I'm posting to answer a few questions:
the acapella tune that I frequently do at George Carlin shows is called "The King Of Rome". It is written by an English singer named David Sudbury, and I learned it from a June Tabor album named "Aquaba". I recorded it on a album named Edgewise in the early 90's.....
the only all-acoustic album of mine is Somerville Live. All my other albums are a mix of ensemble and solo work . 3he ensemble production is a way to get radio airplay, and also is oftern what I heard in my head when the songs were written in the first place. The opportunity to render these songs with the accompaniment I hear in my brain's mind's eye ear is essential to the work I do. Solo songs are just as important, and often they are in their final form also. However, to quote my old friend Shawn Colvin, I'd "never record a song with accompaniment that I couldn't successfully play solo".
Hopefully there's always something there for everybody.
Well, I hope to see you folks in your town soon,
Best,
vance

Hey Vance, loved you at George Carlin in Atlanta.  I bought you cd,  however, I was disappointed that it was not acoustic like your performance was.  Do you have an all acoustic cd, or any songs like that available to download on your website in the future?

DianeSunday, October 14th 2007 8:13PM

WONDERFUL performance at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA. last evening.  I didn't know what to expect for a "warm-up" act for George Carlin, and let me say, I thoroughly enjoyed your witty, humorous act and unbelievable singing, arrangements, and compositions.  I can't wait to purchase your music.  As a new "transplant" from southern NH (near Boston) your act was truely appreciated and I applaud you emensely.  Keep up the great work.

Just thought you ought to know...my son Galen printed up a wild haired photo of you with the caption  My Hero underneath for a class project.  A friend recently moved from Vermont to Colorado and G called him up to play Takin' it all to Tennesse... the friend has not come back yet... Vance, I would like to say I have never heard of any music that moved me the way your music has. I would like compare your music with soul mixed with blue grass but it rolls out as classical - very soothing. I find it very enjoyable to listen to you before I go to sleep to finish off the day just right. I was able to listen to you during your performance at the Performing Arts Center here in San Luis Obispo - George Carlin's show. I would not believe such a accomplished singer would be in that show - wondering if you will ever do a solo or headline out this way ever again? I will be happily sharing your music with friends and family to share your incredible music and talent.

As a Midwesterner I grew accustomed to seeing Vance Gilbert and Ellis Paul at least once a year.  I feared in moving to Las Vegas I'd never see them again.  Now Vance is coming to Vegas with Carlin!  Now I have to find someone who knows the layout of the Orleans so I can track down Vance.  One thing about the smaller shows, you can talk to the artist and get them to sign your purchases.  But it will be so great to witness such a large audience experience the greatness of Vance for the first time....

I was SO thrilled when I opened my Vance Gilbert e-newsletter and saw you are coming to Ann Arbor, MI!!! I can hardly wait the 4 months until January. I tried to buy my tickets tonight, in fact, but they aren't available yet. I am so looking forward to seeing an 'all-Vance' show (I saw you in Flint last year with Carlin). Thanks for scheduling us in!!

Hi All,

hey, you Pensacola folks!

I have to say that that show was one of the very highlights of all the show I've done with George over the past year!! Don't worry, I can handle hecklers, so there's no need to apologize. Your consideration and kindness in that respect is, however, a pretty cool thing.
I'd LOVE to come back somewhere there for a full Vance show - any ideas how that could happen?

Until then, thanks,

Vance

I missed Lena's -- holed up at home after driving 5 hours from Syracuse (a 3- or 4-hour trip normally) during the storm. Wish I'd been there. Hope it was magical and everyone got home safely. BTW, sorry about the big-hair photo on our local newspaper's arts page -- I just downloaded the newer ones from the press site and passed them on to the arts folk.

Vance was amazing as usual. But I am still confused at the interesting pairing of Vance and George on the same bill. Have you been heckled the whole tour as you were at PPAC? Too many drunks in the audience - but I guess that is to be expected on St. Patty's day. That aside - Vance - you were fantastic - have you ever considered a side career in standup?

ChrisMonday, March 19th 2007 1:59AM

Was bummed at first that it wasn't gonna be a full 2 hours of Carlin and then you spoke and sang and we felt that we got 2 full concerts for the price of one. GREAT act.  Hope to catch you again soon somwhere.

Vance, Vance, Vance. Missing you desperately up here in the cold white North. Are you ever coming back to Winnipeg? (or even northern U.S.) I miss your live shows. I have new friends since you were last here and I WANT to introduce them to you. Please come back sometime.

I saw you last night at the George Carlin event in Newport News.  My boyfriend and I became instant fans within your first song! Thank you for introducing us to your music!

Tonight (Feb 18th) was also my first time ever hearing (of) Mr.Gilbert. All I can say is that I really enjoyed his all around talented act. His voice was unlike any I've heard, his songs were touching, and his jokes were the icing on the cake. For those who havn't seen/heard him, I highly recommend checking him out.

Gary MSunday, February 18th 2007 8:44PM

Saw your performance last night in Staten Island and loved it. I went to see George Carlin (who I enjoyed) but was most greatful to see/hear you for the first time. It reminded me of the first time I saw Don Mclean in Greenwhich Village in the 70s. Thanks.

I have been seeing you since I was a student at IWU at the Blue Moon Coffeehouse.  I have graduated by now but you are by far my favorite performer that has come through that way.  I never miss your show.  I just caught your show this weekend (I was the girl in the front row that you teased about the boyfriend mercilessly) and I can't thank you enough for the wonderful performance.  I am getting ready to leave for Japan for a year and I'm so glad I got to catch you before I fly out next weekend.  I was feeling very sad about leaving my boyfriend (it was our last weekend together before I leave), but your show helped me focus more on the blessing of my adventure and have faith that everything will work out as it should with him.  Your unyielding love for life never ceases to pervade the heart of everyone in the audience.   I hope to see you perform sometime at IWU next spring when I'll be back in the country.   I'll even try to bring my guy along with me!  Thank you for your fun stories, jokes and wonderful music making!

Vance --- My first visit to your blog -- Greetings from Boston and I just wanted to say "NOW, HOW COOL IS THAT?!" that you've a connection happening with George Carlin.

Back in the late 1970's I was fortunate to care for his mother a bit when she was a patient at St. John's Hospital out in Santa Monica.  She had this twinkle in her eyes that was pure magic.  In no time flat I saw where he got a LOT of his spunk.

Best to you out there "on the road"...

Just wanted to thank you for your performance at the State Theater last night 1/21/07, when you opened for George Carlin.  We went to the show to Carlin and got quite a suprise when your voice filled the theater.  I want you to perform at Cornell. You will hear from me again.  Can't wait to hear your CD's.

Mr. Gilbert, I saw you along side of George Carlin last night in Atlantic City. Incredible...Unfortunately I had never heard of you before this.I thought you were gonna be a stand up comedian.I was pleasantly suprised to hear such a pure powerful voice over deftly played guitar! Opening with the Sam Cooke"A Change Is Gonna Come" Too bad a couple of impatient morons almost ruined it for me.Luckily almost only counts in horeshoes. I enjoyed you short set so much that i am going to get all your CDs. Thanx again,

I am so excited to hear that you'll be performing here at Illionois Wesleyan University in Februrary!  I was the sound guy at Dublin School (where you'll be again in January) for three years and you were absolutely, hands-down, the BEST performer I ever saw there, by FAR.  In fact, I don't believe I've seen a better performer than you since then.  I'll do anything I can to get in to see you again in February.

What a small world.  You're the favorite performer at my high school in New Hampshire and you're the top dog at my college in Illinois, too.

Had the opportunity to see you in Pittsfield, MA on 10/7/06. What can I say... great show. Fantastic sound which I believe was as much the venue as it was your talent.

You did a fantastic job reproducing many of the tunes on the new covers CD but I must say there is some disappointment in that I feel many of the gems from your past such as Pound of Prevention, Good Cup of Coffee, Witness to Joy, Rocket to The Moon, Don't Leave A Trace, Jenny and The Tower, Times Two, Juliana Walks, etc. are lost forever from your live shows. I hope not these types of songs really display your genius.

Wow is not nearly worthy of the experience I had and the emotion I felt in my heart after being privledged enough to discover Vance Gilbert. I thought he sounded like Arron Neville and even closed my eyes to prove it. I was an instant fan before he completed his first song. I can't wait til he has a show of his own if he even does that in my town of London, Ontario (Canada). I say proudly if he comes to my town, I'll be one of the first to purchase his tickets without question no matter what the price. I just feel he's that good.

I also wanted to say we weren't clapping for your failure when you said Yearwood didn't record "Unfamiliar Moon!"  We were clapping because we couldn't imagine (despite her talent) that her voice could have done the song half the justice yours does.  You gave a truly moving performance.  Thank you.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for the wonderful job you did on Sunday night in Madison, Wisconsin opening up for George Carlin.   Unfortunately George was too busy hawking his own merchandise to mention you may have been selling your disks in the lobby or I would have been sure to purchase one as I will be doing right after leaving this comment.   You put on a great performance to say the least, very inspiring and be assured you have at least two new fans after that.    I only wish George put half the effort into his act that you did, next time he should open for you.   Please don't be a stranger to our area and I may sneak into Illinois to see some of your upcomming shows.   Thanks again and keep up the incredible work.

I just read here thhat Louise was one.. I am so sorry. Last year at your show at the Beal House in Kingston, you talked about your battle and the work you had been doing with the Canine Oncologist. You show was just after we had lost our 12 year old dog to a heart attack during disc surgery. I know this was difficult and that we all grow and learn from these experiences. I am eager to hear you again.. it looks as though you have gigs all over the Country.. It's about time.. Enjoy it...!!

Vance, I drove across Nebraska with two friends to see you in Hastings with Richie Havens. Who knew you had such depth as to hang out with George Carlin, Richie Havens and the KoolAid Man!?!?!

It was a great set. I'd hoped to be able to tell you in Lyons but only saw you briefly on Thursday night and there wasn't an opportunity to say thanks for another evening of great music. We laughed as you so kindly tormented the Kool Aid man.

Hope to see you again soon for a full evening. I'll be checking on the Lincoln concert. If not then, it'll have to be Des Moines.

Not to get all Folkback Mountain (ha!) on ya, but I must gush a bit.

I had the pleasure of seeing you in Flint last weekend, and I enjoyed you just as much as George Carlin...and I've been a Carlin fan since I was a wee lad back in the dusty, distant 70s.  You ride the razor's edge between comedy and real emotion, and it doesn't hurt that your songs are friggin' great.  Sam Cooke and Richard Pryor would both no doubt approve.

With much appreciation,

Hi Vance,

Falcon Ridge isn't going to be the same without you singing, joking, hosting and messing with the ASL interpreters!   I've been going since 1994 and can't remember a year you weren't there.  Any chance you'll sneak in for a day before your New Bedford show?

Jason MooreMonday, May 8th 2006 5:31PM

Hi Vance, I have to tell you I was completely amazed at your talents during the May 7, 2006 show in Flint MI opening for George Carlin.

You can see someone's pure talent when the only thing on the stage is the man / woman and a instrument. That's as pure and as simple as you can get.

The only other folk singer..if you can call him that, he's kinda hard to peg...that I absolutly LOVE is Tom Waits. I'm sure you know of him.

But now I will have to add you to that very short list.

You have ALOT of talent so be proud. You've made a new fan for sure.

Best wishes to you in your travels!

First off, I'd like to apologize for the hecklers at your show with George Carlin at the Whiting in Flint. The vast majority of us in the audience thought you were an awesome performer. In fact, you have given me an interest in folk music, something that I never thought I'd have. Thank you for doing that show, it's something I'll never forget.

My first time seeing and hearing you was at Harris Creek Acoustic on April 30th.  Great Concert. I will endeavor to see you as often as I can in the future.  Laughed so hard I was crying a couple of times.  I sat in the front row on the isle just to your left.  Loved the shoes - Vance Gilbert Folk Pimp!

Vance,
As always it was great seeing you again.  Pam & I were so glad to be able to spend a little time catching up on old friends.  I'll pass on your well wishes to Mike F.
And we'll send you an invitation to the wedding!!!
Thanks to you & Ellis for a fabulous afternoon in Hampton.
All the best.  Love ya,

My husband and I are new but now totally faithful Vance fans. You gave an incredible performance this afternoon at Harris Creek Acoustic in Hampton VA. I expected to love the music..but never expected that I'd laugh so hard and long that it made my jaw hurt. You and Ellis Paul are nbelievable.

Also saw you in Great Falls Saturday night.  Wow!  What a gift you have, and thanks for choosing to share it with us.  You are welcome back anytime.  I'm one of the radio jocks here, and as soon as I get the CD I'll play it on the air.  Thanks again.

My husband I saw you as the opening act for George Carlin in Great Falls, MT last night 04/08/06. Your music is amazing and we were saying this morning that you definitely needed more time than you were alloted so we could hear more! Not only was the music truly fantastic, but you are one hell of a funny guy! Extra bonus! Thank you so much for sharing your gifts with the world and please come back to Montana again! I promise not all of us scream "Yeehaw!" when talent takes the stage!

Nick HopkinsSaturday, April 8th 2006 12:10PM

I caught you in Helena and was moved by the music.  I wish that we could have heard more.  Come back again as the headliner so that we can spend the whole evening together.  I would love to hear you in the Myrna Loy theater.  It's much more musically friendly.

Kay Friday, April 7th 2006 8:48PM

It's about time I learned your name!!!!
You were introduced to the audience in Omaha last night - I didn't think I'd ever heard of you.  You walked out onto the stage - I still didn't recognize you.  You started to sing - oh my god.  who?! what?! where?! where?! ...thunderstorm passing...if goodbye...lightening... If These Teardrops Had Wings."  Vance, thank you for writing and singing, and for traveling with George Carlin.  I hope your life is how you want it.  Best, K

Then I do some checking and realize that you're with George Carlin and my first thought is "Gee, guess I have to see Carlin to see Vance!"  :)

Looking forward to a very fun night on Thursday.

Vance,
I see that you are going to play in Pistol River, OR. I am a huge fan living in Seattle, and I am hopiing that you make the short trek up here while you are in the northwest. You had a good crowd when you were here, get up here again and I'll promise you a bigger crowd! Keep on coming out this way, and you'll develop a strong following out here in the northwest...we need you out here!

Vance,
br /Tonight I was filling out one of those silly "friends questionnaire" things that I loathe and yet I do anyway, and one of the questions was "What is your favorite CD at the moment?".   And, because it has been in my car cd player for several days running AGAIN, I had to say it was your Edgewise album.  I never grow tired of it.  I never grow tired of trying to sound like a train when I sing along with Your Train.   And I will never forgot watching you standing on the absolute edge of the stage at Miller Park in Chattanooga Tennessee, with just the instrument God gave you and hearing you sing King of Rome with such purity that it literally blew me away.   Gosh how many years ago was that?   Anyway, I came here to get your homepage link for my friends and saw the blog and had to stop and tell you how much I appreciate your music and your awesome talent.  Keep on keepin' on.

Hi All,br /br /Thanks for all of the great posts. br /Been a great year so far - this fall I seem to be able to strike a decent balance tween plenty of work and downtime, I'm still hard at work on this album of covers up at Thomas Eaton Studios in Newburyport.br /br / Tune list (so far) looks like this:br /br /Heaven Help Us Allbr /Until You Come Back To Mebr /It Wouldn't Have Made Any Differencebr /Tired Of Being Alonebr /A Case Of Youbr /Cry Like An Angelbr /A Change Is Gonna Comebr /Castles Made Of Sandbr /Save The Last Dance For Mebr /Rainy Night In Georgia,br /br /and, possibly, Ain't Nothin' Like The Real Thing w/Lori McKenna!!br /br /Coming up to being one of the hardest albums to "get right" that I have ever experienced. I can't just "do Vance" on these tunes....I'm constantly asking myself if I really have the right to go after these pieces after their all so definitive versions have left their mark on all of us. But I love them so, they feel so "right" when I play them, and they mean so much to me - each tune in it's own way. Wish me luck.br /br / I had a little bad time with a post here from someone who thought a performance I gave somewhere was, well,.... he called me a handful of unflattering names in his "review" of my show. I had the post removed not because I'm above criticism, but because it was so negative that I wonder why the person bothered to go so far as to get to my site, write what they wrote, read the scrabbled encoded stuff, then to post....br /br / Simply put, they went to a lot of trouble to be mean. br /br /You gotta wonder what's up with that. It is indeed a FAN blog, and as I do pay for the site, it  cannot be the all anarchy, all the time channel. It's my home, and within these walls I am indeed thin-skinned. And sometimes armed. I'm all over that now, and no, I wasn't talking about you. You've read this far and that means a lot. Hi Vance!
br /
br /Well, I don't even know what to say, it is a bit difficult. About myself, I'm from Hungary, I am a student at the ELTE University, but it doesn't matter. Maybe 10 or 11 months ago I saw you playing your song "Taking it all to Tennessee" in a late night show which was called Around the globe or something like that. It was your performance when you were joking like "It's indifferent if you like the song or not which i'm gonna play next, because i already got my money". :-)  It was translated, so i don't know your original words.
br /So, then i heard Taking it all to Tennessee, and it really touched me. It is still in my ears ( to be honest, only the chorus is still in my head, but it is there, and it will stay for a while... )
br /After that night, i asked some people to seek your name or this song, but they didn't achieve victory. It seems like you are not sold in Hungary... What i would love to ask you is to send me some instructions how to play it, and send me the chords (If you don't mind. I ain't got no commercial intentions, it's about music, your music, and this great song of yours), because i have heard this only once and I really loved it. Actually, i have been playing the piano (Alas,  not the guitar, but that's another story) since i was five, and i'm a student of a jazz school at the same time.
br /Please hit me back even if you can't grant my request. My e-mail is     klauszmarton@mailbox.hu
br /
br /Thanks a lot
br /
br /Unfortunately I couldn't get to hear any other songs of yours, but because i'm a devotee of music, I can call myself
br /

Thanks again Vance -  you are one special person.  Love ya

Man, I miss you.  First saw you with Art Garfunkel - last saw you at Montclair, NJ with a couple of Fast Folk Cafe gigs in between.  The Monmouth University show was great, too.  You're a beautiful person.

Saw Vance at Caffe Lena in Saratoga Springs, NY back in the early spring and more recently at Falcon Ridge Folk fest in Hillsdale, NY. Both great shows. A true performer who's music has made it into our regular rotation at home work and in the car. Just wish he'd stop back to Saratoga on Sept 1st so that he could join Ellis Paul on the stage at Caffe Lena.
